What is the difference between solar thermal and solar PV?
Solar PV uses the sun to generate electricity whereas solar thermal uses sunlight to heat your hot water
How do they work?
Solar thermal uses sunlight to heat fluid (glycol/water solution) contained in collectors, the fluid is circulated from the collector to a cylinder where the heat is transferred to produce hot water.
What are collectors?
Collectors are serpentine shaped pipework, underneath a top layer of glass, which are inside the panels you see placed on roofs.
Do solar panels work when it is cloudy?
Grant solar collectors work even in cloudy conditions.
What type of roof can they be fitted to?
Grant solar thermal panels can be fitted to any type of roof.
Do I need planning permission to add them to my property?
In the majority of cases solar thermal panels do not need planning permission, for listed properties it is best to ask with your local planning department.
Are they compatible with the heating and hot water system I already have?
Grant solar collectors can be added to an existing system or installed as part of a new heating system, but requires a cylinder with a solar coil which may well mean your existing cylinder will need to be replaced to maximise the performance of your solar panel system.
How much will installation cost?
Cost is determined by the size of the system required and how complex installation is, but generally anywhere between £3,000 and £5,000, Green Energy Banbury will be able to give you a free quote.
Does the installation cost include VAT?
From 1st April 2022 until 31st March 2027 installation of solar thermal panels is 0%.
